Est-ce \u00e0 cause d\u2019un contretemps culturel que la plupart des \u00e9crits d\u2019Harlan Ellison ne sont jamais parvenus outre-Atlantique, ou s\u2019agit-il plut\u00f4t d\u2019une mal\u00e9diction paranormale\u00a0? Le fait est que, r\u00e9put\u00e9 aux \u00c9tats-Unis pour sa bibliographie de nouvelliste, Ellison est rest\u00e9 anonyme en Europe, en dehors des cercles de lecteurs d\u2019imaginaire. N\u00e9 en 1934, il a produit moult textes de science-fiction, assortis de plusieurs recueils de nouvelles et de scenarii pour l\u2019audiovisuel am\u00e9ricain \u2013 dont plusieurs \u00e9pisodes de la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre s\u00e9rie<em> Star Trek<\/em>. <em>D\u00e9rapages <\/em>a re\u00e7u le prix Locus du meilleur recueil de nouvelles en 1998, un an apr\u00e8s sa publication\u00a0; il est arriv\u00e9 en France chez Flammarion en 2001, puis a \u00e9t\u00e9 repris en format poche par Folio SF en 2003. Pourtant, quinze ans plus tard, le libraire n\u2019a h\u00e9sit\u00e9 qu\u2019une poign\u00e9e de secondes avant de me le mettre entre les mains, en m\u2019assurant qu\u2019il s\u2019agissait l\u00e0 d\u2019un talent ind\u00e9niable toujours en attente de reconnaissance. Ellison est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le 28 juin 2018\u00a0; les louanges de cette critique apaiseront-elles son fant\u00f4me revanchard\u00a0?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>C\u2019\u00e9tait au temps des miracles. D\u2019ailleurs, le premier d\u2019entre les miracles, c\u2019\u00e9tait le temps lui-m\u00eame. Autre miracle\u00a0: le fait qu\u2019on ait appris \u00e0 le remonter, bel exploit.\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb (p. 147)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ellison d\u00e9laisse un temps la science-fiction pour s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 d\u2019autres formes d\u2019imaginaire\u00a0: le fantastique et la fantasy urbaine. Au travers des vingt-et-une nouvelles de ce recueil, il explore les racines communes des deux genres. \u00c0 savoir, les folklores et peurs irrationnels que le genre humain n\u2019a jamais su abandonner en de\u00e7\u00e0 de son \u00e9volution. T\u00e9l\u00e9pathe complex\u00e9, divinit\u00e9 d\u00e9sabus\u00e9e, humano\u00efde marin en qu\u00eate du grand amour\u2026 Les narrateurs des nouvelles, tour \u00e0 tour monstres de foire ou spectateurs hallucin\u00e9s, donnent \u00e0 chaque intrigue une double dimension. Celle de l\u2019imaginaire tout d\u2019abord, puisqu\u2019ils puisent dans les myst\u00e8res les mieux gard\u00e9s de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 pour attiser notre d\u00e9sir, conscient ou pas, d\u2019assaisonner notre quotidien d\u2019un peu de magie. La soci\u00e9tale ensuite, pour les probl\u00e9matiques indirectement soulev\u00e9es par la majorit\u00e9 des intrigues, et les \u00e9motions profond\u00e9ment humaines qu\u2019\u00e9veille chaque lecture dans notre c\u0153ur, quels que soient ses protagonistes.<\/p>\n<p>Pour assurer la coh\u00e9sion de son ouvrage, Ellison fait honneur tant au fond qu\u2019\u00e0 la forme de l\u2019objet-livre\u00a0: lignes cass\u00e9es et cadres inclin\u00e9s, la th\u00e9matique du d\u00e9rapage se rappelle au bon souvenir du lecteur \u00e0 la fin de chaque nouvelle, et au d\u00e9but de la suivante. Le th\u00e8me n\u2019est que rarement, voire jamais \u00e9voqu\u00e9 dans le texte, et il faut parfois une r\u00e9elle r\u00e9flexion pour l\u2019identifier dans les enjeux des nouvelles. Loin de mettre l\u2019esprit en difficult\u00e9, cette exigence impose au lecteur une prise de recul syst\u00e9matique et tr\u00e8s instructive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab<em>\u00a0M\u00eame les dieux finissent par comprendre. Pourvu qu\u2019on leur en laisse le temps.\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb (p.324)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Voil\u00e0 une affirmation qui aurait tout aussi bien pu figurer dans une \u0153uvre de Gaiman ou de Pratchett. \u00c0 l\u2019instar de ces \u00e9crivains renomm\u00e9s, Ellison a su retranscrire l\u2019\u00e2me des \u00c9tats-Unis dans son \u00e9criture, en y int\u00e9grant une dimension surnaturelle \u00e0 allumer le regard des plus terre-\u00e0-terre. Et loin de se limiter aux magies grecques et nordiques, le recueil fait la part belle aux mythologies du monde entier, du cryptide c\u00e9l\u00e8bre dans nos l\u00e9gendes au parfait inconnu d\u2019autant plus effrayant. Entre<em> American Gods<\/em> et <em>De bons pr\u00e9sages,\u00a0D\u00e9rapages\u00a0<\/em>passe du rire \u00e0 la r\u00e9flexion soci\u00e9tale en quelques lignes\u00a0; sans oublier une influence lovecraftienne omnipr\u00e9sente dans certains textes. Si Ellison privil\u00e9gie un format d\u2019\u00e9criture en prose, il s\u2019est autoris\u00e9 quelques fantaisies\u00a0: une nouvelle sous forme de script\u00a0; une autre sous l\u2019aspect d\u2019un \u00e9trange journal de bord aux entr\u00e9es incoh\u00e9rentes. De quoi renouveler l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de son lecteur, et le p\u00e9renniser au fil des multiples univers qu\u2019il introduit.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 la diversit\u00e9 de ses th\u00e8mes, <em>D\u00e9rapages<\/em> est empreint d\u2019une ind\u00e9niable m\u00e9lancolie, explicitement annonc\u00e9e par l\u2019auteur dans son introduction, et renvoy\u00e9e \u00e0 la figure du lecteur entre certaines nouvelles. En effet, le recueil est parsem\u00e9 de courts textes autobiographiques, qui content une p\u00e9riode tr\u00e8s instable de la vie d\u2019Ellison. D\u00e9cousues en apparence, ces tranches de vie abruptes font \u00e9cho \u00e0 l\u2019introduction, qu\u2019on oublierait facilement sans piq\u00fbres de rappel. Un retour \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 parfois cruel, et autant de degr\u00e9s suppl\u00e9mentaires perdus par \u00e0-coups dans la pente progressive du recueil.<\/p>\n<p>Dans son introduction, Harlan Ellison met son lecteur en garde contre la dangerosit\u00e9 des d\u00e9rapages, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de gamelles bien palpables ou des al\u00e9as de la vie. Le sien \u2013 de d\u00e9rapage \u2013 reste parfaitement contr\u00f4l\u00e9 au fil des r\u00e9cits \u00e9clectiques qui composent son recueil. En d\u00e9peignant un monde encore oscillant au bord du XXI<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, partag\u00e9 entre une technologie aux attentes grandissantes et une soif de l\u00e9gendes d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 nostalgiques, il offre \u00e0 ses lecteurs la plus fantastique des culbutes intellectuelles.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Le th\u00e8me est\u00a0: profitez-en tant que vous le pouvez.
